SAI Finland celebrated its 200th anniversary with the publication of a book on the history of auditing the country’s public finances.
The pages describe the history of the establishment and development of the organization, starting in 1825, when the first Accounts Chamber was founded in the Grand Duchy of Finland.
Over the course of two centuries, audit in Finland has evolved along with changes in the SAI itself and society. In 1948, the institution became known as the National Audit Office, which was not only engaged in auditing, but also checked the legality and effectiveness of the work of state bodies. Since 2001, the SAI has been functioning as an independent service under the Parliament, which is enshrined in the Constitution.
In recent years, the tasks of SAI have expanded significantly. Now it controls the conduct of election campaigns, party funding, and maintains a transparency register that tracks lobbying activities.
The book focuses on developments from the 1990s to the present day, covering such important topics as parliamentary relations, organization of work, international cooperation, and the development of audit activities.
