In October, in Rio de Janeiro SAI Brazil hosted a workshop to discuss the implementation of the ClimateScanner project, supported by the United Nations Development Programme.
The event brought together representatives from SAIs of Albania, Belarus, Brazil, China, the Dominican Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Micronesia, Pakistan, Palestine, Russia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Zambia.
Climate Scanner is a tool developed for SAIs to evaluate government efforts on climate change at the national and international levels. During the workshop, participants reviewed nine sections and 19 components of the tool, assessing each component based on its level of implementation and completeness.
The ClimateScanner covers three main areas: public administration, public policy, and climate finance.
So far, 18 countries have used this tool to evaluate their national climate strategies, including Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Finland, Spain, Kenya, the Maldives, Morocco, New Zealand, the Philippines, Slovakia, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and the USA. Additionally, representatives from 136 other nations have been trained to utilize the tool.
The results of the assessment will be shared at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan in November 2024. Next year, SAI Brazil plans to extend the use of this approach to other regions as part of their ongoing efforts.
